This week is a bittersweet one for golf fans as the fourth and final major of the season will kick off. The PGA Championship may be the least publicized major of the year, but it most certainly is not the least exciting. This year the championship will be held on the beautiful shoreline of Lake Michigan in Sheboygan, WI at Whistling Straits. The par-72, 7,500-yard classic Pete Dye-design is a challenging links course through and through.
This event was last held here in 2010, where in an odd turn of events, Dustin Johnson was penalized for grounding his club in a “bunker” that had been trodden on by spectators all week. Doubtful that we’ll see such an occurrence this year, but we think it’s safe to say that this will be a great one with so many hot players in the mix!

How it works:
- My Guy: If I’m picking in a one-golfer league, and had to just pick one…he’s the guy.
- Stripes: “Man, I was striping it today” as the big guy (TW) likes to say. Call these guys my “favorites” each week.
- Wildcard: All in the name. Enough said.
- Shank: I hate to even say this word, especially on a golf course, so as you can imagine these are guys to avoid.
My Guy:
Jason Day
- Hot as any player on Tour right now
- Won the RBC Canadian open and is looking for his first major this week in Wisconsin
- In top form this season – first in birdies or better and 2nd in the all-around ranking
Stripes:
Justin Rose
- Consistently strong performer in majors, and trending in absolutely the right direction (Top 6 in last 3 events).
- Aside from an uncharacteristically shaky Sunday, had a great shot at winning the Firestone last weekend.
- 7th in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green and 4th in Birdie average proves he’s been consistent all year.
Bubba Watson
- Long-hitting lefty led the field last week in an absurdly long driving distance average
- Solo second at Firestone and at the RBC Canadian Open
- Leads PGA Tour in strokes gained: tee-to-green and par 5 scoring
Jordan Spieth/Rory McIlroy
- How could we possibly leave these guys off the list?
- Between the two of them:
- #1, #2 in the world
- 1st in scoring average (Spieth), 2nd in scoring average (Rory)
- 1st in birdie average (Spieth), 8th in Birdie Average (Rory)
- 1st in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-green (Rory), 2nd in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-green (Spieth)
- 1st in Putting Average (Spieth)
- (assuming Rory had enough starts to be official Tour rankings)
Wildcard:
Danny Lee
- Potentially the next big name out of Asia. Young gun with a whole lot of potential.
- Still riding a confidence boosting win at Greenbrier.
- Not necessarily lighting up the stat sheet, but 11th in putting average and 1st in # of hole outs on the season should help him this weekend.
Shank:
Shane Lowry
- No chance this guy contends after winning his first PGA Tour event last week at Firestone
- Missed two of his last three cuts before winning last week
- Poor iron play this season – 116th on Tour in GIR percentage
