The Players Championship, often considered to be the fifth major, draws one of the best fields of the PGA Tour season. This year will be no different as TPC Sawgrass and the infamous 17th hole island green host the best golfers in the world for the 42nd year. This Pete Dye classic will challenge the players’ ball-striking and short game as the greens average just 4,500 square feet and should be rolling at 12.5 on the Stimpmeter.
We think it’s safe to say that there will be plenty of excitement this weekend as the leaders make their way to the island green 17th and long par-5 18th holes on Sunday. And with names like McIlroy, Spieth, Watson, Scott and Woods headlining this tournament will not be one you want to miss!

How it works:
- My Guy: If I’m picking in a one-golfer league, and had to just pick one…he’s the guy.
- Stripes: “Man, I was striping it today” as the big guy (TW) likes to say. Call these guys my “favorites” each week.
- Wildcard: All in the name. Enough said.
- Shank: I hate to even say this word, especially on a golf course, so as you can imagine these are guys to avoid.
My Guy:
Rory McIlroy
- Looked unbeatable last week at the Cadillac match play event as he outlasted the star-studded field of 64 golfers
- Top 10s at the last two Players Championships
- Back to playing great golf – last four events: Win, solo 4th, T11th, and T9th
Stripes:
Justin Rose
- In very strong form, winner at TPC Louisiana just two weeks ago and a T2 at the Masters
- T4 in last year’s edition of the Players
- 22nd on the PGA Tour in GIR percentage
Lee Westwood
- Great ball striker should who tends to fare well at TPC Sawgrass
- Three top 10s at this event since 2010
Sergio Garcia
- Loves this event – 2008 champion and top 10s in the last two editions
- Solid form: 14th on the Tour in strokes gained tee-to-green and 15th in overall scoring average
- Good chance at being right there in the mix if he can avoid a meltdown on Sunday
- We’ll forget about his numerous disasters at 17, hopefully he can too
Wildcards:
Tiger Woods
- Still have no idea what to expect on any given shot, let alone 4 days of play
- Truly is a wildcard this week considering his time off and infrequent event play
- Strong showing at the Masters with a T17
- Plays well at Sawgrass and recently won here – 2013 Players Champion
- Your guess is as good as ours on this one…
Shank:
Martin Kaymer
- Defending champion is simply not playing good golf
- Currently sits at 150th in the FedEx Cup standings
- Missed his last three cuts and didn’t advance to the round of 16 in the Cadillac Match Play event last week
